Private boxing lessons for beginners: what to expect

Boxing has a reputation that keeps a lot of people away: sparring, injuries, a gym full of fighters. A private boxing lesson is nothing like that. It is one coach, one student and a pair of focus mitts, and you can start with no experience at all.

You will not be sparring

Private lessons with Insight Fitness are built around pad work, footwork and conditioning. No sparring is required. You hit the pads James holds, he moves and calls the combinations, and he corrects your technique between rounds.

Your first lesson

A first session starts with the basics everything else is built on:

  • Stance. Feet, hands and chin in the right place, so you are balanced and protected.
  • The jab and the cross. The two straight punches, thrown from your stance and brought straight back.
  • Footwork. Stepping forward, back and to the side without crossing your feet.
  • Short rounds on the pads. Putting it together, with rest in between.

Hooks, uppercuts, slips and longer combinations come once the basics are solid, usually sooner than people expect.

What you need

Clothes you can move in, water and a towel. Gloves and hand wraps matter once you are hitting pads regularly, so ask about them when you book. Lessons can happen at your home, so there is no gym membership involved.

Why boxing works as a workout

A few rounds on the pads work your legs, core, shoulders and lungs at the same time, and the concentration it takes makes the time pass quickly. It also pairs well with strength training. Many of James's clients do both: strength one day, pads and conditioning the next.

Who private lessons suit

Complete beginners, people who find the treadmill boring, anyone who wants more confidence, and people who already train and want their striking coached rather than watched. Clients have used private lessons to get in shape before a wedding, to lose weight, and to start out in combat sports.

Insight Fitness teaches private boxing lessons at home across Oak Park, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks. See the training options, read what clients say, or book a first lesson.
