How often should you see a personal trainer?

There is no single right answer, but there is a right answer for you. It depends on your goal, your budget, your experience and how much you will do on your own between sessions.

Three sessions a week

Best when you are starting out, coming back after a long break, or working toward something with a date on it, such as a wedding. Frequent coached sessions build technique and habits quickly, and there is little room for a week to slip.

Two sessions a week

The most common choice, and a good balance for most people. It is enough to make steady progress in strength and fitness, with recovery days in between, and it fits around work and family.

One session a week

Works well once you know your way around the exercises and will train on your own as well. The coached session becomes a check-in: technique, progression and a plan for the week ahead. On its own, with nothing in between, one session a week makes for slow progress.

What counts between sessions

Walking, a short session from your plan, stretching and decent sleep all add up. Ask your trainer for homework you will actually do; ten minutes you do beats an hour you skip.

How long to keep going

Many people train with a coach for a few months to learn and build momentum, then reduce how often they meet. Others stay for years because the accountability is what keeps them consistent. Both are fine; what matters is that you keep training.

Making the decision

Start with what you can sustain for three months, not what sounds most impressive. It is easier to add a session than to recover from burning out in week three.

Sessions with Insight Fitness are an hour, one to one, Monday to Saturday, at your home in the Conejo Valley. Rates depend on how often you train, so ask James what fits, or book a first session.
