Boxing for fitness: six benefits of a boxing workout

You do not have to want to fight to get a lot out of boxing. Training on the pads with a coach is one of the most complete workouts there is, and one of the few people actually look forward to.

1. Conditioning

Boxing is trained in rounds: a few minutes of hard work, a short rest, repeat. That pattern pushes your heart and lungs hard and builds the kind of fitness that carries over into everything else.

2. Full-body strength and core

A good punch starts at the feet and travels through the hips and core before it reaches the fist. Throwing hundreds of them works your legs, trunk and shoulders together.

3. Coordination and footwork

Hands, feet and eyes have to work together: stepping, punching and moving your head in time with a moving target. It is a skill, so it keeps improving long after the first lessons.

4. Focus and stress relief

It is hard to think about your inbox while someone is calling combinations at you. Many people find a round on the pads clears their head better than anything else they do.

5. Confidence

Learning to stand, move and punch properly changes how people carry themselves. Beginners often notice the difference within a few weeks.

6. It does not feel like a treadmill

Variety keeps people coming back. Combinations change, rounds change, and there is always a next skill to learn, which makes boxing one of the easier workouts to stick with.

Adding boxing to your training

Boxing pairs well with strength training: strength one day, pads and conditioning the next. Private lessons start from stance and footwork, with no sparring required. Read what a first boxing lesson is like.
